Natural Superficiality series

Natural Superficiality series

In this series exploring liquid surfaces, the artist aims to interrogate the irony inherent in aesthetics, drawing attention to the way we are simultaneously drawn to both the ambiguity of the concept of "superficiality" and what we commonly refer to as "natural." The title, Natural Superficiality, speaks to this tension—suggesting that the superficial and the natural are not as distinct as we might assume. Instead, they are intricately intertwined, inviting a reflection on the contradictions between appearance and essence, depth and surface.

The series consists of nine distinct art pieces, all created in 2013 by the artist Ignacio Calleja. Through these works, Ignacio Calleja probes how liquid surfaces—dynamic, fluid, and ever-changing—can serve as a metaphor for the often deceptive nature of what we perceive as "natural." In this context, "natural" may not be as pure and authentic as we might like to think, and "superficiality" might carry a deeper meaning, questioning the very foundations of what we consider genuine or real.

Each of the nine pieces in the series contributes to this exploration, inviting the viewer to reflect on the delicate interplay between surface appearances and underlying truths. By focusing on the aesthetic qualities of liquid surfaces, the artist challenges us to reconsider how we perceive the world around us and to confront the layers of meaning embedded in the seemingly simple or superficial elements of nature.
